“Wayland’s Smithy

One short drive and a long walk from the White Horse of Uffington, Wayland’s Smithy is situated in a small grove of trees in the middle of many acres of farmland. The formation is a long burial mound surrounded by smallish stones with some large ones in front. You can’t go into the mound, just crouch in the entryway, as a stone wall blocks off the rest. The legend here is that Wayland, a wayward Norse god, sheltered at the smithy and would shod any man’s horse for a few coins. True to form, the gaps between the stones were crammed with silver and gold. It’s even been said that the White Horse comes down once a year for a new set of shoes.

Wayland’s Smithy was quite peaceful. I enjoyed my time there and could have stayed much longer. The sun was going down, though, and we had to go. I will surely return.
