Stones at Sunset
|
|
The sun was just setting when we arrived at Avebury for
our first night, and it gave the stone formations an even
stranger presence than they usually have. The main Avebury
ring contains two smaller stone circlesif it helps
you to visualize it, picture a smiley face with two big,
round eyes and no smile. This photo was taken standing
just inside the South Circle. The three large stones you
see are about 15 feet tall, weigh more than 40 tons, and
are indicative of the sort of rocks that once made up
the entire three ring circus that is Avebury. Many stones
were demolished centuries ago, the fragments used for
building bridges and homes.
