Voices
at Avebury
|
|
Avebury was the most impressive site we visited on our
journey, not just for the sheer size of the entire formation
(which includes a pair of processionals that stretch out
for several miles from the main stone ring), but for the
stones themselves. To me they didnt seem like anything
that could have come from the earth. They looked like
alien travellers that had fallen from the sky. I never
believed in inanimate objects having voices before I laid
my hands on the stones at Avebury. The Merrivale stones
suggested ancient conversations, but the Avebury
rocks talked. When I touched the first one it spoke of
its incomprehensible (to me) mass. The next one very gently
explained that it had existed forever and that I couldnt
hope to understand what that meant. I was surprised that
this encounter didnt frighten me. Instead, I felt
an immediate and absolute sense of respect and awe. It
was only after dinner, when Jeff and I stumbled out into
the dark to visit the 60-ton cove stones in the North
Circle, that I nearly collapsed from weird fright.
